I just mention this because if you are a younger, or even midde aged person, who is looking to cover your aging parents or grandparents, it might be a good time to look for a policy for yourself too!

The may disappoint you, but I cannot give one perfect answer to this question that will satisfy everybody. The best choice will depend upon important individual factors like your needs, budget, and expectations for a life policy. What I can do is outline some of the common options that older people choose.

Life Insurance For Seniors

Final Expense For Seniors - These are also called burial or seniors life policies. It is simply whole life insurance with a modest death benefit, from $2,500 – $25,000. It is, as the common names implied, mostly intended to pay for funeral arrangements and burials. However, the cash belongs to the named beneficiaries so they can use it as they see fit. For example, let us say that Mr. Jones inherited $20,000 from his father’s burial policy. If he spends $10,000 on a funeral and other associated expenses, he is free to use the other $10,000 as he pleases. This way, Mr. Jone’s father had prepared to make sure his funeral got paid for, and he also got to leave something to his son. This can work out very well for older people with modest incomes and savings who are concerned about the cost of funerals, and who would also like to pass on a modest benefit to their heirs.

Term Life For Older People – It gets a little tougher to find term policies as we get older, though I have seen some companies that offer to cover people up to age 75 if they are in reasonable health. It would be tough to find a 30 year term, but a 10 to 15 year policy may be on the market. Since term is cheaper, people can afford to purchase a higher face value. This may be a good choice for a fairly heathy senior who wants to buy higher value of coverage, but also who understand the policy will expire after the term is up. If Mr. Jones had purchase a 10 year term policy at 70 and survived it, he would be unlikely to be able to replace it.

So which one should you pick? If you have modest means, and would just like to make sure that your by burial and other final expenses can be covered, the smaller whole life policy may be a good choice. If you have a larger use for coverage, like for business or estate transfers, and you are in pretty good health, you may be able to find a term policy that will suit you better.

Planning For Retiremennt Dental and Vision Costs

But of course, proper care of teeth and eyes is very important for the long term health and happiness of older people. If you have been to a dentist or eye doctor lately, you also know that it can get expensive.

Dental Insurance – I have seen some plans that are even specifically marketed to seniors. In return for a premium, people can buy private dental insurance. Keep in mind that not everything may be covered, and there will still be out of pocket expenses like copays and deductibles. In addition, many dental insurance policies specify a yearly maxium that they will pay out. Before purchasing a plan, make sure you understand how it works.

Discount Dental Plans – While not insurance, these plans operate sort of like network health plans work. They have a group or association (network) of service providers. Some also include vision care. This network of providers agrees to charge plan members a discounted price. These plans are usually much cheaper than insurance, because they don’t actually pay for services, but just allow access to a negotiated price. Find more information here: Low Cost Discount Dental.

Government or Community Programs – I have just seen an advertisement for a local institution that helps low income people with food banks, resale shops, etc. They had a dental clinic open on certain days for lower income people and senior citizens. You may be able to find programs like this in your local area. Federal and state clinics also operate clinics in some areas. It would be worth it to search for resources now, before you have an emergency need for help.

What is Different About Life Insurance for 50+?

Some of you may know that I also run the Over 50 Website. A frequent topic of conversation over there is the possibility of obtaining life insurance over age 50. The first thing that people want to know is why older people need life insurance.

Some Life Insurance Needs at 50 Plus!

Funerals are expensive. Prepare financially for final expenses.

Estate Transfers. This may be particularly important if a business or home is involved, and other heirs must be compensated besides the one who will retain the asset.

Settle debts

Leave an inheritance or legacy.

Provide for a spouse or others.

Can Older People Find Life Insurance?

I have some good news. Because Americans are, on average, living longer and more productive lives, many insurers hare happy to extend benefits to older people, and to offer those policies at lower rates!

You can find out which plans are best for you with over 50s life insurance quotes here. Since insurers vary policies and premiums by local areas, it is important to find out which companies are competitive in your town or city. Also, the type of plans that are available for a person like you will certainly vary by your age and health. But minor health issues or advanced years should not deter you from doing some competitive shopping.

Term LIfe For Age 50 – 75

Some companies offer term life for older people, even up to 75. If you are middle aged to a senior citizen, find term policies for 50 to 75 here. You may not find a cheap 30 year term policy at this time, but you can very well find an affordable 10 year policy (maybe even 20 years) if you are in reasonable health.

Whole Life Options

And as we get older, the advantages of whole life get clearer. As long as the policy is kept in force, the policy will cover us. Of course, whole life costs more than term life, but it is because it will cover us in our old age, and not just when we are younger. And many whole life policies will pay us the entire death benefit if we survive to 100. So that is a win-win situation.

Sometimes smaller face value whole life policies that are designed for older people are called final expense policies. They are not for everybody, but are very popular these days. Most seniors can qualify. Learn more about final expense insurance rates.

Are You Too Old For LIfe Insurance?

Many of us got older, but did not outgrow our need for coverage. We could still have a spouse or kids to help, a mortgage payment to make, or just want to make sure that there is plenty of cash to pay for a funeral and settle debts.

It hardly takes any time to fill out an online quote form, and since the service is free and without obligation, there is very little reason to do some competitive shopping if you are curious about finding 50+ life insurance. You maydo it for yourself, or do it for a parent who may need some help planning.
