Five Ways To Cut Health Care Costs
Tips To Reduce Health Care Costs Today
It seems that each year more and more of your paycheck goes to pay for health insurance. Even though your salary may increase you can’t seem to get ahead because health care costs just keep going up. There is something you can do to help reduce the amount of money that comes out of your pocket.
Educating yourself about health care insurance costs can help you save you money. Insurance policies can be complex and learning about them can take time. So consider this a very quick class in saving money on health insurance. It will probably take only a minute or two to read this and you will learn something and save some dollars. Here are five things you can do to cut your healthcare costs:
Stay in network – You insurer has negotiated lower rates with the facilities in the network and those savings are passed on to you. When you have to have tests done, you want to make sure to try stay in your network so you can take advantage of these savings. In general, anyone you are referred to or are involved in your procedure make sure you check if they are in the network.
Ask about alternate facilities – Often doctors may use outpatient surgery centers as well as hospitals and the cost can be much cheaper for an outpatient center. Ask your physician about all the possible facilities where the procedure could be done. Shop around and get the best price.
Use therapeutic alternatives – Most of us know to ask for the generic equivalent but sometimes there may not be one. What many of us don’t know is there is something called “therapeutic alternatives.” A therapeutic alternative is a drug that is in the same class but is chemically a bit different. If you feel your prescription drugs are too expensive ask about this option.
Check out screening costs – Many insurance plans are now required to give certain preventive-care screening without charging deductibles or co-payment. It can depend on your age, but some of the preventive screenings that may qualify are blood-pressure, diabetes and cholesterol tests, mammograms, flu shots, routine vaccines and well-baby to name a few. When you are looking for health insurance policies you may want to see if the policy you are considering has this option. Preventive screening is a win win situation for both you and the insurance company.
Ask for a discount for cash payment – If you have not yet fulfilled your deductible and have to pay for a test or procedure yourself, see if you can get a discount for paying cash. You may be able to get a 20% discount by paying cash. Make sure you still submit the claim though so that it counts against your deductible. Also check out to the rate. Although the insurance company should have negotiated a lower rate this is not always the case. It always best to find out about all options in regard to payment.
