Covering Teens On Car Insurance

Teen Car Insurance Alternatives

OK, one of the toughest things that we parents get to do is to turn our teens into safe and educated drivers. Part of that is finding teenagers car insurance for them!

I will be the first to admit that there are few bargains when you are looking for under 25 car insurance, but you can do some simple things to keep the premiums as low as possible.

Be sure and call your own insurer, or a qualified local agent, to confirm before you do anything. State laws differ.

1. Student drivers, on learner’s permits, are probably covered on the parent’s (or supervisors) license. i.e. if you are conforming to the rules of a learner’s permt which requires a supervisor (who is a licensed driver), the student should be covered. Be sure and call your own insurer to confirm this!

2. As soon as the student gets a license which allows them to drive alone, they need auto insurance! Yikes! You may be shocked to see your nice low cost premium double or triple. It doesn’t always have to be this way. The cheapest way to cover a teen is probably to get them covered on the parent’s policy. That way, they can take advantage of the parent’s discounts. There are also some other discounts for taking driver’s eduaiton classes, having good grades, etc. that the young person may qualify for on his or her own.

3. There are some funky things about policies, like which car the young driver is “named” on that may affect premiums too. Also, if the teen does not drive that often, naming them as an occaisional driver on a parent’s vehicle will be cheaper than naming them on their own car. These, of course, are discussions you should have with a local agent who is familiar with the insurer’s rules and your state laws.
