Lower Rates?

Rates May Be Lower, But Interest Is Sagging

We are not sure we now all of the reasons that auto premiums may be dropping a bit, but we can assume these few are true.

  • Increased competition, on TV, Online, and in magazines for tight budgets.
  • Newer cars come with safety features and anti-theft devices that qualify for auto insurance discounts.
  • The US Cash For Clunkers program may have actually contributed to the fact that more new cars are on the road, while more older vehicles have been junked.
  • The home stimulus has turned many thousands of renters into home owners. More people may qualify for the popular auto and home insurance discount.
  • It may not be true that premiums are cheaper, but that the type of consumer who uses the Internet to search for quotes may be a more educated and responsible vehicle owner. Because of that, they may have better credit and a better driving record.

According to one major brokerage, the index of auto insurance premiums has actually declined slightly in 2010. This is a US national average across several national and well known insurers. Because the average is national, and because most of the time, insurance rates are set more at a local level, this does not mean your own premiums are going to be lower. But it may mean this is a good time to do some comparison shopping to see if you can find a lower rate.

Interesting theories there. You think the cash for clunkers and home owners stimulus actually brought down insurance rates? Something to think about.

Also, there are more hybrid cars. A lot of the top auto insurance companies actually offer a discount for hybrid cars. This is not because hybrid cars are always safer, but just because insurance companies believe the owners tend to be more responsible. The issues are complex – but actually sort of interesting.
